Review Corner
This is our newest segment on this show where we review products and let you know what we think. In this first edition of review corner, Chris took a look at CleanMyPC. We want to say a big thank you to the folks over at MacPaw for sending us a copy of the CleanMyPC for this review.
The installation of the software was fast , clean and hassle free. When you launch the application, your presented with a neat interface that gives you 8 options. The first was able to free up 25GB of space on Chris’ clogged up hard drive, making his computer faster in the process. Afterwards, it gave him the option to post this result on twitter if he wanted to.
Other main interface options include Hibernation which is a power saving state designed for laptops and netbooks. While sleep puts your work and settings in memory and draws a small amount of power , the hibernation feature puts your open documents and programes on your hard drive and turns off you computer this saves you running down your battery and is especially helpful when you want to access you documents and files quickly.
The registry maintenance option fixes and solves and registry issues such as broken entries, uninstalled programs leftovers and wrong entries that should not be there. Again excellent at this task and fast. Have you ever tried to uninstall a program you didn’t want and the uninstaller programe for it broke? No matter what you did that piece of junk sat on your hard drive, clogging it up and slowing it down. Well with a few clicks with CleanMyPC makes them history!
When you simply remove files to and from Recycle Bin they can still be brought back by third party data recovery software such as Recuva or recon. Yet sometimes you need to remove files for good. This is where CleanMyPCʼs “Secure Erase” comes in. Files and folders removed with “Secure Erase” cannot be recovered. This is achieved by rewriting files with zeroes (“zero-out”) multiple times before permanently removing them from your hard drive.
While launching applications automatically with Windows is convenient, some applications might do that without your knowledge and you might want to prevent them from automatically running. Removing applications from autorun manually is usually not convenient and sometimes beyond your control. Windows stores autorun data in several places and locating a specific application might be tricky.
CleanMyPC collects all applications which start with Windows into one simple interface – simply hover any application and click the corresponding “Disable” button to prevent it from starting with Windows. You can re-enable it again in the same way.
Those clever people at MacPaw have included a gadgets and extensions manager where you can remove windows gadgets you don’t use, malware that lurks in toolbars in your browsers and plugins you do not use. Yet again fast and effect clean up resulting in Chris’ pc speeding up to it old ways.
Last but not least privacy guard. It cleans your internet browing history and cookies folder and any saved passwords, usernames for your bank details and logon details for sites. This feature can really protect you from thoese nasty hackers out there. All-in-all, Chris thought that it was a great piece of software and gave it a 4 out of 5. CleanMyPC is available right now for £29.95 from the online MacPaw Store. You can also get yourself a free trial from MacPaw.com/pc_cleaner.
Picks of the week
Adi’s pick of the week went to Angry Birds Space. It is an interesting twist on the original angry birds game. As ever, your task is to use your slingshot to make those birds fly and pop those green pigs, in this version of the game, the gravity laws are slightly altered. Since the birds in space, your bird will continue to fly straight on unless if you enter a gravity field marked out by a bubble on the screen.
The way that these gravity bubbles work is that your bird will circle around the planet until the bird slows down and drops onto the planet. However, the pigs are not just on their usual wooden structures. They can also be found in bubbles as well. If you get rid of one of these bubbles, then the pig will die along with it.
All-in-all angry birds space will still provide you with the same enjoyment, and pig-popping fun as before. Angry birds space is available right now for your google android device, PC, Mac or iOS device and it gets a 3.75 out of 5.
Chris’ pick of the week went to Kinect Star Wars for XBox 360. Kinect Star Wars allows fans to physically experience training as a Jedi, using the Force and battling with a lightsaber. Using full body motions, players can live out the ultimate Star Wars fantasy, no controller required.
